Who Gap tall is cut for
The Tall Shop targets women around 5’9” and up. Gap’s tall pattern is the most complete re-grade of the mall brands: it lengthens the inseam, extends the sleeve, drops the knee break, and scales the rise. That last one is the sleeper feature. A rise that isn’t scaled makes “tall” pants sit wrong no matter how long the inseam is; Gap gets this right, which is why its tall trousers read as tailored rather than merely long.
How the size runs work
- Denim runs numeric waist sizes, typically 27 to 33 in tall. That’s a narrower band than regular (which reaches higher), and the ends of the run go first during sales.
- Tops, dresses and knits run letter sizes, generally XS to XL in tall, with some styles reaching XXL.

What does not change: width grading. The tall pattern only alters length and proportion, so you take your usual Gap size in either fit. If a style runs slim in regular (Gap’s tailoring often does), it runs slim in tall too.

What to buy at Gap tall
Denim is the crown jewel. Gap runs tall across its trend silhouettes (baggy, barrel, pleated, wide-leg, straight), which almost nobody else does in tall. It’s also the only tall denim in the mall that clears a 34 inch inseam with room to spare. By our standard (34 is the floor for full-length, 36 is what great actually looks like), Gap is the closest thing to real length in this rotation, which says more about the rotation than about Gap. Tailoring and wovens. Blazers, trousers and structured shirting in tall are Gap’s second act. They cut slimmer than Old Navy; if you’re between sizes in a blazer, go up.
CashSoft and satin. Gap’s CashSoft knit line is the best cashmere-feel-per-dollar in mall retail, and satin midi skirts and dresses in tall are unicorns elsewhere. Both are the most-requested restocks in tall and rarely survive a markdown with a full size run. When the sale radar flags them, move.

Gap fabrics have more structure than Old Navy: heavier denim, tighter wovens, knits that hold their shape. Care is standard, with one tall-specific warning: rigid cotton denim can shrink lengthwise in a hot dryer. Hang-dry the jeans; the inseam you bought is the inseam you want to keep.
Worth doing the math on: a Gap tall blazer at full price is still cheaper than a regular blazer plus the tailoring to lengthen its sleeves, and sleeve lengthening is the alteration tailors most often refuse (there’s rarely enough fabric in the cuff). Buying the length cut into the pattern beats paying to fake it afterward, every time.
