Last week we wrote that Old Navy had stopped repricing and that nothing there looked urgent. Seven days later almost every tall style in the store is marked down, and the large majority of the sale sits at exactly 50% off.

The categories that were holding out got pulled in
Tall denim has been at 50% off for weeks, so denim barely moved. What changed is everything around it. Sweaters and cardigans went from roughly a fifth of the category on sale to all of it, and activewear, pants and tees followed.

The single flat rate is the part to pay attention to. When a store marks down a handful of slow sellers, the discounts land at uneven depths. When one rate covers most of the store at once, it is a timed event with an end date rather than clearance, and the prices go back up when it finishes. Athleta ran the same pattern for three weeks and its promotion expired this week.
Activewear is where the drop is biggest
These were 20% off a week ago and are half price now, which is the widest move in the store.

The full-length cut is the one to get in tall. Old Navy also sells this in a 7/8 and a crop at the same price, and both end well above the ankle on a tall frame, so check which one you are adding to the cart. Every size from S to XXL is available.

Was $29 last week and has come down again. Fleece is the category Old Navy sells hardest into fall, so this one is likely to keep its price through the event and then jump back.

A wide leg with a tall inseam behind it, down from $36 last week.
Tees and tops are the cheapest they have been

This was $16 last week. Sixteen of the eighteen tall colorways are now at $10 with the full XS to XXL run, which makes this the easiest thing to stock up on in the whole sale.

Pants and denim
Denim was already at 50% before this event, so the jeans are worth buying on their merits rather than because they moved.

Down from $35 last week. The Pixie flare is a full-length trouser, unlike the Pixie ankle styles that sit alongside it at a similar price.
High-Waisted Wow Wide-Leg Jeans · $18 (was $37), 50% off, tall 4 to 18, four washes at this price
Was $22 last week. All four washes carry the complete 4 to 18 run.
Extra High-Waisted Wide-Leg Jeans · $25 (was $50), 50% off, tall 2 to 18, eleven washes
Nine of the eleven washes are $25 with the complete 2 to 18 run, unchanged from last week, and the Felippa wash is $24 at 60% off.
Curvy Extra High-Waisted Wide-Leg Jeans · $25 (was $50), 50% off, tall 2 to 18, Medium Wash
The curvy fit is the one that moved. All six washes were full price a week ago and all six are marked down now, with Dark Wash and Black Wash at $22. Old Navy lists this separately from the jean above, so check which fit you are on before adding to the cart.
What to do about it
A flat rate across a whole store reverts on a date, so the timing here is straightforward. If you want tall activewear, fleece or basic tees from Old Navy this fall, this is the week to buy them, because the 20% off prices these replaced are what comes back.
The denim is a separate decision. Tall jeans have sat at 50% off for several weeks running and did not move for this event, which suggests that price is standing rather than promotional. There is less reason to rush on those.
Sizes are the usual constraint. The tall runs are complete on most of what we listed above, and that stops being true quickly once a sale this wide gets going.
