Last week we reported that J.Crew’s tall dresses had come back after three weeks of the selection draining, and we told you to check the returning dresses in your size first because most had come back with only one or two sizes on the page. Seven days later the dresses are leaving again, and fall trousers and skirts have taken their place.
Our J.Crew tall fit guide covers how their tall sizing compares to the rest of the range.
The rotation is out of dresses and into pants
| Category | Left the tall range | Newly listed |
|---|---|---|
| Dresses & jumpsuits | 18 | 9 |
| Pants | 8 | 15 |
| Skirts | 4 | 12 |
| Jeans | 10 | 11 |
The dress rebound lasted one week. Dresses and jumpsuits lost twice as many tall colorways as they gained, and the share of that category on sale fell from about 85% to 65% as the marked-down summer stock cleared and full price fall product replaced it.
Pants and skirts went the other way, gaining more than they lost. That is the fall assortment arriving.
The sale is smaller and shallower
The share of tall styles on sale fell from about 70% to 60%. The discounts that remain are thin by the standards of the other three stores we track: the most common markdown at J.Crew right now is 10% off, and the typical cut across the tall sale is 30%.
That makes J.Crew the most expensive of the four stores this week, at a point when Old Navy has half its store at 50% off.
What is worth buying
Tall slim-wide jean · $89 (was $148), 40% off, tall 25 to 32, Resin Rinse

Full price last week and the best new markdown at J.Crew. The complete 25 to 32 waist run is available, which is rare enough here to be the reason to act on this one.
Tall Stratus pant in textured satin · $50 (was $148), 65% off, tall S to XXL, Black
The deepest discount on a full-length tall pant at J.Crew, holding at the same price as last week with every size from S to XXL.
Tall wide-leg trouser in chino · $75 (was $128), 40% off, tall 25 to 31, Loden Green
A full waist run on a fall-weight trouser.
Tall camp-pocket wide-leg pant in stretch corduroy · $90 (was $148), 40% off, tall 29 to 32, Pale Bone
Corduroy is the piece of J.Crew’s fall range that tends to sell through, but this one is down to four waist sizes already.
The cropped styles are cheaper for a reason
Two of the deepest discounts at J.Crew this week are on cropped pants, and the price reflects how they sell in tall.
Tall cropped Stratus pant in block print · $39 (was $148), 75% off, Faded Black
Tall Charley kickout cropped jean · $89 (was $148), 40% off, tall 25 to 32, Rinse Wash
A cropped pant cut for a tall frame ends somewhere around mid-calf on most people buying tall, so treat these as the length they are rather than as a discounted full-length trouser. At $39 the Stratus is worth it if you already wear cropped styles on purpose.
What is left in dresses
The summer dresses still marked down are down to one or two sizes each. A tall mini sheath in linen blend is $45 from $178 in a single size, and an Ondine mini dress in cotton poplin is $50 from $188 in two. The Arden shirt-dress that was $100 last week is back at the full $168.
If a J.Crew tall dress in your size is on sale right now, that is the whole opportunity. There is no reason to expect it back next week, and this week showed the restocks do not hold.
What to do about it
J.Crew’s tall range now moves in a clear rhythm: summer stock clears out at deep discounts in ones and twos of each size while fall product arrives at full price. Both halves are visible on the site at once, which makes the sale share look more useful than it is.
The three full-length pants above are the actual opportunities, and the slim-wide jean with its complete waist run is the pick. Everything else is either a single size or a fall piece that has not started marking down yet.
