Gap’s tall sale held around 80% of the store for a fourth week with a typical discount near 40%, so the headline looks the same as last week’s. The denim underneath it changed a lot. Every tall jean is now marked down, and the deepest prices in the category went up.

More jeans on sale, cut less deep

Two things happened at once. The jeans sitting at 20% off got deeper, and the jeans sitting at 70% off got shallower. The range compressed toward the middle, which is why more of the category is on sale while the typical cut fell.
The cheap end went up
Five tall denim styles that were at 70% off a week ago are at 60% off or less today.

We flagged this at $23 for three weeks running and wrote that a discount holding that long is one the retailer intends to keep. It went to $39 instead, which is a $16 jump on the same wash with the same complete waist run. That call was wrong, and the lesson runs the other way from what we said: a price holding for several weeks can mean the run is ending rather than that the price is permanent.

The expensive end came down

Was $53 last week. This is the best tall denim buy at Gap right now, and the waist run is the reason: 24 through 35 is the widest tall range of any jean at the four stores we track, and all four washes carry it. A full-length flare with that much size coverage is uncommon.

The fall knits started marking down
Gap’s tall sweaters went from about 60% of the category on sale to 75%, and the typical cut deepened from 20% to 30%. This is the first real movement on product that arrived full price a few weeks ago.

What to do about it
Gap moves its tall denim in both directions at once, so the store-wide numbers hide what matters. Watch the specific wash you want rather than the headline.
For anything in the deep clearance tier, the useful read from this week is that those prices end by rising, not only by selling out. The $23 jeans are a $39 jean now, and four other styles did the same thing on the same week. If a tall jean is at 60% or 70% off and it fits, that is the week to buy it.
The ’70s Flare at $44 with a 24 to 35 waist run is the pick of the week. The fall knits are worth watching rather than buying, since they have only just started marking down and Gap tends to keep cutting into October.
