The four stores split this week. Old Navy, Gap and Athleta all pulled discounts back and sent a batch of tall styles back to full price. J.Crew went the other way, with prices dropping across its tall range and very few going back up. 📉
J.Crew’s deepest tall discount also got deeper, reaching 80% off today. This reads as a real end-of-season clearance rather than a promo with an end date, which means it keeps cutting until the rack is empty. The catch is that the size runs are thinning fast. Check the J.Crew tall fit guide before you buy, because J.Crew tall runs long and sale returns are less fun than sale purchases.

Full XS to XL tall run still in stock, 35 reviews at 4.4, and a lobster print that is either exactly your thing or absolutely not. The best combination of price, reviews and size availability in this week’s cuts.
Tall smocked halter dress in stripe · $68, was $151, 60% off retail, tall XS to XL
19 reviews at 4.58 and a complete size run. Smocked bodices are forgiving on a long torso, which is not something you can say about most halter cuts.
Tall Rori pant · $84, was $168, 50% off, tall 0 to 16
Wide-leg, 80 reviews at 4.6, and the whole numeric size run from 0 to 16 is in stock in both the cocoa and marigold block print. Half off a J.Crew tall pant with every size still available is unusual this late in a clearance.

1,365 reviews at 4.72, the best-reviewed tall piece in J.Crew’s entire sale section. If you buy one thing from this article, this is the one with the most evidence behind it.
Tall midi crinkle skirt · $80, was $169, 55% off retail, tall 2 to 16
Tall slim-wide jean in semi-stretch · $99, was $148, almost 35% off, tall waist 26 to 32
Only a third off, but the complete 26 to 32 tall waist run is in stock, which almost nothing else in this clearance can claim.

The cuts are steeper here and the sizes are thinner, so read the size line carefully on these.

The deepest tall markdown in J.Crew’s clearance. Tall 16 in Windy Blossom, tall 10 in the other color. That is the whole remaining inventory. (The deepest cut anywhere this week is still an Old Navy sweater at 85% off, which we covered in the sale radar.)
Tall open-back dress in mixed gingham print · $45, was $228, 80% off, tall 18 and 20
A $228 event dress cut for tall, now $45, 42 reviews at 4.67. We flagged this one in June at $59 and it has kept falling. Sizes 18 and 20 are what is left.
Tall tiered shirt-dress in striped cotton poplin · $30, was $148, 80% off, tall 14 only
11 reviews at 4.91, the highest review score in the clearance, with one size left.
Tall patch-pocket pullover dress in structured cotton poplin · $45, was $148, 70% off, tall XS to XL
Full size run at 70% off, which is a rare combination, with 42 reviews at 4.14.

About the cropped pants
Two of the deepest discounts are cropped, and we want to be straight about what that means on a tall frame.
Tall cropped Stratus pant in block print at $39, down from $148, is 75% off with a genuinely complete size run in both numeric and letter sizing. It is also, per the name, cropped. On most tall bodies a pant designed to crop at the ankle in regular sizing lands somewhere around mid-calf, and the tall version usually corrects part of that gap but not all of it.
Tall Charley kickout cropped pant in faux leather at $45, down from $168, is the same situation in tall 32 only.
Buy them if you like a cropped pant. They are well made and 75% off is 75% off. Just do not buy them expecting a full-length trouser, because the word in the product name is doing exactly what it says.
One to skip
Tall empire-waist mini dress in Gramercy linen blend dropped from $178 to $80 this week, 60% off retail, with the full 2 to 20 tall run available. Sounds great until you get to the reviews: three of them, averaging 2.33 out of 5.
Three reviews is a small sample, and a deep cut plus a complete size run late in a clearance usually means the item is not moving. When the only feedback that exists is negative, the discount is telling you something. Your $80 might be better spent on the Reverie dress. 🤔
The TLDR summary
J.Crew is the place to shop tall this week, because it is the only one of the four still cutting. The dress rack is where the depth is, but the size runs on the 70-plus percent markdowns are down to one or two sizes each.
If your size shows on something at 70% off, that is a today decision. If you want a complete size run, the Rori pant at $84, the Soleil pant at $84, the Reverie dress at $70 and the patch-pocket pullover dress at $45 all still have one.
