We rescanned every tall style at Old Navy, Gap, Athleta and J.Crew this morning and compared it to our July 22 scan. The summer clearance is packing up. 🧳
Across the four stores, a large batch of tall styles went back to full price in two weeks. These were repriced rather than sold out, so if you had something sitting in a cart since late July, this is your bad news.
Here is the shape of it.
The sale is shrinking almost everywhere
| Store | Share of tall styles on sale | Typical discount |
|---|---|---|
| Old Navy | 65% | 35% off |
| Gap | 70% | 40% off |
| Athleta | 40% | 30% off |
| J.Crew | 75% | 25% off |
Athleta moved the furthest of the four. Two weeks ago we wrote that Athleta had put 30 to 40 percent off a big chunk of the store while its six new styles stayed full price. That event is over. The Elation Ultra High Rise Legging went from $53 back to $89. The Skyline High Rise Barrel Leg Pant in black went from $83 back to $139. The Tee Time Dress went from $95 back to $159.
Old Navy pulled back on activewear specifically. The StudioSmooth leggings that were $16 and $18 are $40 and $45 again. Bounce Fleece and Dynamic Fleece sweatpants went back to $45. That is 63 Old Navy tall styles returning to list.
J.Crew is the exception
J.Crew held its sale share at 75% and went deeper. Its steepest tall discount reached 80% off, and prices fell on a batch of tall styles while very few went back up.
That is the difference between a promotional event, which ends, and a genuine end-of-season clearance, which keeps cutting until the rack is empty. J.Crew is doing the second one. We wrote that up separately in J.Crew’s tall clearance report.
The deep deals still standing
These were all in stock in tall at the time of the scan.
SoSoft Mock-Neck Fair Isle Sweater · Old Navy, $7 (was $50), 85% off, tall XL and XXL

A fair isle sweater in August is a strange purchase until you remember it will be October in eight weeks. At $7 the math stops mattering. Only XL and XXL left in tall.
Interval Jacket · Athleta, $45 (was $135), 65% off, tall S to XL

The single best thing left in Athleta’s tall sale, and one of the very few with a full size run intact. 528 reviews at 4.7. Athleta tall outerwear at a third of retail does not sit around.
Skyline High Rise Barrel Leg Pant · Athleta, $60 (was $139), 55% off, tall 0 to 16
Slate is still discounted with the whole size run in stock, even though black went back to $139. Same pant, $79 apart, depending only on which color you click. Worth knowing before you shop this one.
CashSoft Rib Midi Sweater Dress · Gap, $25 (was $90), 70% off, tall S to XL
Gap’s CashSoft feels far better than $25 suggests, and midi cut on a tall pattern lands where midi is supposed to land.
Endless High Rise Pant · Athleta, $40 in Coastal Teal (was $109), almost 65% off, tall 0 to 12
Athleta’s most-reviewed tall pant, 17,681 reviews at 4.6. Coastal Teal is the color carrying the discount.
The under-$10 bin at Old Navy
Old Navy’s tall dress clearance is still the best value per dollar anywhere in this dataset. All of these are $10 or less with a full XS to XXL tall run in stock:
- Ruffle-Sleeve Fit & Flare Midi Dress · $10 (was $50), 2,313 reviews at 4.4
- Fit & Flare Lace Midi Dress · $10 (was $50)
- Handkerchief Hem Midi Dress · $10 (was $50), 1,203 reviews at 4.4
- Ruffle-Trim Asymmetrical Mini Dress · $8 (was $40)
- Slit-Neck Smocked Top · $6 (was $30)
Old Navy’s tall dresses run long enough that “midi” stays midi, which is the whole reason to buy tall in the first place.
What this means for the next two weeks
Fall inventory is landing at full price, which is what pushes the summer racks down. Gap already dropped 34 new tall styles this week and Old Navy is putting Halloween on the shelf in early August.
The pattern is dependable: as new season stock arrives, whatever is left of summer gets cut harder to clear floor space, but the size runs thin out first. In tall, that happens faster than in regular, because the tall runs were shorter to begin with. If a tall size you wear is still showing on something at 70% off, that is the buy signal. Waiting for 80% usually means waiting for your size to disappear.
Sale sizing is unforgiving, so check how each brand cuts before you commit: Athleta, J.Crew, Gap and Old Navy.
