New This Week

J.Crew's Tall Assortment Shrank Again, Down 20% Since Mid-August

J.Crew's tall selection shrank again this week, its third straight weekly decline. Only a handful of new styles arrived, each already down to a single size, and two of the three corduroy colors we flagged last week are already gone.

J.Crew’s tall selection has shrunk for three checks running, and it is down about 20% over fifteen days. Sale share and typical discount held roughly steady, so this week’s story is about how much less tall stock the site is carrying. Our J.Crew tall fit guide covers sizing, since J.Crew tall tends to run long.

The dresses disappeared

A large batch of tall styles left the site entirely this week, more than in any week we have followed. Dresses and jumpsuits accounted for about half of it.

This is consistent with what we have reported the last two weeks: J.Crew’s tall dresses have been clearing out fastest of any category, and this week the clearing finished for a large share of them rather than continuing as deeper markdowns.

The corduroy pant we flagged is already thinning out

Tall Zoe barrel pant in stretch corduroy · Smoked Walnut, $148, tall 25 to 32

Tall Zoe barrel pant in stretch corduroy

Last week we called this launch “one color complete, the rest a lottery,” noting that Pale Bone and Cooper Grey were already down to two sizes each while Smoked Walnut held the full run. This week, Pale Bone and Cooper Grey are gone from the site completely. Smoked Walnut is unchanged, still $148, still the complete 25 to 32 waist run. The lottery played out in exactly the direction we expected, in one week.

New arrivals are landing one size at a time

Only 4 new tall styles appeared in stock this week, and every one of them launched with a single size available:

  • Tall Charley kickout cropped jean, Ecru Wash, $110 (was $148), tall size 32 only
  • Tall ruffle-hem midi dress in poppy print, Oyster Grey, $123 (was $188), tall size 20 only
  • Tall Kaya pant in sateen, Deep Marina, $124 (was $138), tall size 16 only
  • Tall Kaya pant in sateen, Lotus Bloom, $124 (was $138), tall size 6 only

Compare that to two weeks ago, when the Margeaux blazer and Soho car coat both launched with complete size runs. Whatever is driving the smaller tall assortment this week is affecting new arrivals as much as it is the standing catalog.

The deals that are still standing

Not everything moved. Three of last week’s picks are exactly where we left them.

Tall Kate straight-leg pant in four-season stretch · Navy, $63 (was $138), 55% off, tall 0 to 16, 347 reviews at 4.58. Second week running at this price, full run intact.

Tall Stratus pant in textured satin · Black, $50 (was $148), 65% off, tall S to XXL, 559 reviews at 4.44. Unchanged.

The Tall Margeaux blazer in four-season stretch in Navy is still full price at $248 with the complete tall 2 to 16 run, and the Tall Soho car coat in River Rock is still $298 with all six sizes in stock. Neither has sold through or been discounted, which for J.Crew tall outerwear counts as a genuinely stable two weeks.

The TLDR summary

If the Kate pant or the Stratus pant in Black are your size, buy now rather than later. This week showed us that J.Crew tall inventory can disappear within a single scan cycle, and the two items that have survived two full weeks unchanged are the exception, not the rule. For everything else, especially dresses, treat anything still listed as inventory that could be gone by the next check. 👖
