We went back through the tall sections at Old Navy, Gap, Athleta and J.Crew this morning. Combined, almost 75% of the tall styles we looked at are discounted, down from almost 85% ten days ago. That reverses the record we reported last week, and one store accounts for nearly all of it.

Old Navy’s sitewide event ended on schedule
Old Navy’s sale share dropped 26 points, from 100% down to almost 75%, and it did not happen evenly. Sweaters and fleece pieces, including every new fall arrival we praised last week for launching already discounted, went straight back to full price. Gap looks quiet, but a fall wave just landed
Gap’s headline number held at 80%, and that steadiness is hiding a batch of new tall styles that arrived this week, mostly cozy sweaters, corduroy, and pajama sets. About half of them launched already on sale, which is unusual for new stock at any store we track. Tall jeans held their 50% median discount for a second straight week. Athleta’s 30% promo came back on different styles
Two weeks ago Athleta’s 30% off promotion expired. This week it returned on an almost entirely different set of leggings, while the styles that carried it last time reverted to full price. J.Crew’s tall assortment keeps getting smaller
J.Crew’s tall selection shrank again, its third straight weekly decline and about a 20% drop since mid-August. Only a handful of new styles arrived, each down to a single size already. What this means for the next two weeks
The pattern across all four stores this week is rotation rather than a single direction. Old Navy’s blanket promo ended but its underlying clearance deepened. Athleta’s promo ended two weeks ago and came right back on new styles. Gap’s headline number sat still while a fall collection quietly launched half-discounted underneath it. Only J.Crew moved in one consistent direction, and that direction was fewer tall styles, not different prices.
The practical read: if a specific item’s discount just disappeared, especially at Athleta, it is reasonable to expect a similar discount to resurface on a different style within the next week or two, based on this store’s pattern so far. If a J.Crew style you want is still listed, treat that as the exception rather than something you can count on being there next week.
