J.Crew ran a 40% off rate across much of its tall denim last week. That rate expired, and the jeans carrying it went back to the full price. At the same time, every marked-down piece in the tall clearance held its number exactly, which makes this the cleanest example of the difference between the two kinds of sale price we have seen in a while.
More tall styles were available this week than last, with fall skirts, trousers and dresses filling in behind the summer pieces.

The denim promotion expired

The clearance did not move at all
Every tall clearance price at J.Crew held exactly where it was. The tell is the same one that works at Old Navy: the promotional prices ended in 50 cents because they were calculated as a flat percentage off the list price, and four out of five of those rose this week. The clearance prices end in 99 cents, and all of them held.
Tall Stratus pant in textured satin · $50 (was $148), 65% off, tall S to XXL, Black
The best thing on sale in the tall range at J.Crew. Black is the only colorway at $50 and it carries S through XXL, which is a complete run at a price that has now held for two weeks. The same pant in Ivory, Spring Rain and Toasted Paprika is $70, Blushed Peach is $80, Navy is $90 and Burgundy is $100, and most of those are down to one or two sizes. Worth reading carefully, because J.Crew lists this jean twice under the same name. The version above in the demi-boot cut went back to $148 this week. This one is the curvy cut, it is a clearance price rather than a promotional one, and it held at $90 with the complete waist run. Both are cropped by design, so plan on a length that ends at the ankle.
Tall cropped Stratus pant in block print · $39 (was $148), 75% off, Faded Black
The deepest discount in the tall range and the cheapest tall pant J.Crew is selling. The name is accurate about the length, so treat this as a cropped wide-leg. The Yellow Multi colorway on the same page is $133, which is the gap a single style can carry between two colors.

What to do about it
The lesson this week is one you can use at the register. A J.Crew tall price ending in 50 cents is a percentage taken off the list price for a limited run, and it goes back up. A price ending in 99 cents is clearance, and it ends when your size runs out.
Everything on the clearance list above held for a second week, and several pieces still carry complete size runs: the Stratus satin pant in Black at S to XXL, the Rori pant at 0 to 16, the Gramercy dress at nearly 2 to 20 and the new crinkle skirt at 2 to 16. Those four are the ones to act on.
For denim, wait. The 40% rate on the slim-wide and the Charley ran for one week, and J.Crew has brought it back before. Buying either at the full $148 this week would be paying for the timing.
