Old Navy's Half Off Event Ended and Most Tall Prices Went Up

Old Navy's sitewide 50% off event expired this week. About three quarters of its tall styles cost more than they did seven days ago, the PowerSoft leggings went from $20 to $24, and the fleece sweatpants went from $22 back to the full $45. The clearance racks held.

Last week Old Navy put nearly its entire tall section at 50% off, and we said the flat rate was a timed event that would end on a date rather than by selling out. It ended. About three quarters of the tall styles that were in stock both weeks cost more today than they did seven days ago, and the share of the tall range sitting at half off or better fell from almost everything to about a fifth.

If you bought during that week, you did well. If you waited, the list below is worth reading before you shop.

Our Old Navy tall fit guide covers the sizing if you are new to their tall range.

The share on sale barely moved, which is the part that makes this event easy to misread. Most of the tall range still carries a red price. What changed is the size of the cut behind it, from a flat 50% down to a typical 40%, and in several categories down to 30%.

Activewear went from a typical 50% off to 30%. Jeans did the same. Tees settled at 40%. Two categories held their ground completely: sweatshirts stayed at a typical 50% off and dresses stayed at 60%, because those two run on clearance pricing rather than the event.

Everything we named last week costs more

High-Waisted PowerSoft Full-Length Pocket Leggings · $24 today, $20 last week, tall S to XXL, Dusk Navy

The discount went from 50% to 40%, so the price moved about $4. This is still the full-length version, which is the one to pick.

High-Waisted SleekTech Joggers · $24 today, $20 last week, tall S to XXL, Mocha

Same story and the same $4.

Bounce Fleece Half-Zip Pullover Sweatshirt · $32 today, $25 last week, tall S to XXL, Orchid

This one went from 50% off to 35% off.

High-Waisted Bounce Fleece Wide-Leg Sweatpants · $45 today, $22 last week, tall S to XXL, Mockingbird

The sharpest reversal in the store. Mockingbird carried a 50% cut last week and sits at the full $45 today.

Oversized Button-Down Boyfriend Shirt · $32 today, $20 last week, tall XS to XXL, White with pink stripe

EveryWear Crew-Neck T-Shirt · $10 today, $7 last week, tall XS to XXL, Wasabi

The basic tees took the smallest hit in dollar terms and are still the cheapest tall tees at the four stores we follow.

Vintage Crew-Neck T-Shirt · $10, 50% off, tall XS to XXL, Bergamot

This one held its price exactly through the expiry, which is the useful thing to notice. Read on for why.

The prices that held

A price that survives the end of a storewide event is standing clearance, and at Old Navy you can spot it by the ending. The event prices ended in .49 and .99 because they were calculated off the list price, and roughly four out of five of those went up this week. Every clearance price ending in .97 held exactly where it was.

That gives you a simple rule while you shop: a tall style ending in 97 cents is priced to clear, and it will end by running out of your size rather than by going back up.

High-Waisted OG Loose Jeans · $15 (was $60), 75% off, tall 2 to 18, Ecru

High-Waisted OG Loose Jeans in Ecru

The best tall bottom in the store right now. Ecru carries the complete 2 to 18 run at this price, it is a full-length loose leg rather than an ankle cut, and it held through the expiry. Zenas is $18. The other washes sit between $27 and $36, so the wash you pick matters more than usual here.

High-Waisted OG Straight Ankle Jeans · $13 (was $45), 70% off, tall 2 to 18, Starshade

The cheapest tall jean we found anywhere this week, with the full 2 to 18 run in Starshade. Worth knowing before you order: this is an ankle cut, so on a taller frame it reads as a cropped jean that ends at the top of the shoe. Buy it as that and you will be happy with it. The other washes are $22 to $25.

Curvy High-Waisted OG Straight Ankle Jeans · $22 (was $45), 50% off, tall 2 to 18, Flossie Ann

Old Navy sells a Curvy version of several jeans under an almost identical name, and the two carry different prices week to week. This is the Curvy cut, it held its price, and Cerys and Faded Light Wash are at the same $22.

High-Waisted Weekender Pull-On Crop Flare Jeans · $20 (was $40), 50% off, tall 2 to 18, four washes

All four washes held at $20 with the complete size run in each. A pull-on crop flare is a cropped pant by design, so treat the length as the point of the style.

New arrivals: a fleece line and one jean

Old Navy brought in a fall activewear group called Baseline Fleece, and all of it landed at a 30% introductory cut in tall S to XXL.

Baseline Fleece Mock-Neck Sweater · $28 (was $40), 30% off, tall S to XXL, four colors

Baseline Fleece Mock-Neck Sweater

Black Jack, Heather Gray Logo, Sanguine and Periblue, each with the full size run.

Baseline Fleece Oversized Hoodie Sweatshirt · $31 (was $45), 30% off, tall S to XXL, four colors

High-Waisted Baseline Fleece Wide-Leg Sweatpants · $31 (was $45), 30% off, tall S to XXL, three colors

The wide-leg sweatpant is the piece to look at first, since a tall wide-leg fleece with a complete size run is uncommon at this price.

Mid-Rise CloudMotion Dance Pants · $28 (was $40), 30% off, tall S to XXL, Black Jack or Mocha

Seamless Jacquard Full-Zip Jacket · $35 (was $50), 30% off, tall S to XXL, three colors

Seamless Jacquard Full-Zip Jacket

High-Waisted Asymmetrical Button Baggy Jeans · $38 (was $55), 30% off, tall 2 to 18, Annie

The only new tall jean this week, with the complete 2 to 18 run.

What to do about it

The event is over, so the reason to hurry is gone for most of the store. The 30% introductory rate on the Baseline Fleece group is the kind of number that gets deeper as fall goes on, and all of it is well stocked today.

The exception is the clearance. The jeans ending in 97 cents held their prices through an expiry that moved almost everything else, and several of them still carry a complete 2 to 18 run. Those end by selling out, so if the Ecru loose jean at $15 is your size, that is the buy of the week at Old Navy.

Worth remembering for next time: Old Navy ran this event for about a week. If the whole tall section goes to a flat 50% again, that is the week to buy the activewear and the fleece.
