Sale Radar: Prices Fell Across All Four Tall Stores This Week

Old Navy cut prices across its tall section and J.Crew went deeper on dresses, while Gap quietly ended a promo and Athleta rotated which half of the store is on sale. Here is what moved and what is worth buying.

We rescanned every tall style at Old Navy, Gap, Athleta and J.Crew this morning and compared it to our July 13 scan. Prices dropped on far more tall styles than they rose on. 📉

That headline number hides four very different stories, though. One store is running a genuine clearance, one is running a promo that already ended, one is just shuffling which rack is discounted, and one is doing something closer to a fire sale.

Here is the shape of it.

Where each store stands

Tall sale share by store
StoreTall styles on sale, July 13TodayPrices cut this weekPrices raised
Old Navy85%85%48663
Gap80%80%10697
Athleta60%60%5337
J.Crew70%75%10821

The sale share barely moved anywhere except J.Crew. What changed is how deep the cuts go and which items are carrying them.

Old Navy is the fire sale

486 price cuts in nine days, against 63 increases. Old Navy’s typical tall discount is holding at 40% off and its deepest is 85% off, which is the biggest number in this dataset by a comfortable margin.

Crew-Neck Heart Sweater · $7 (was $50), 85% off, tall S to XXL

Crew-Neck Heart Sweater

A heart-print sweater at the end of July is an odd thing to put in a cart, right up until you notice it is $7 with the entire tall size run in stock. Sweater weather is roughly ten weeks out. 🧡

The rest of the deep end at Old Navy is dresses, and the size runs are still complete on most of them:

Old Navy’s tall dresses run long enough that a midi stays a midi, which is the entire reason to shop tall in the first place. At $10 with a full size run, this is the best value per dollar anywhere in the four stores.

Also worth a look, and also under $10:

Metallic Peplum Tank Top

The new cuts at Old Navy

These were full price or close to it last week:

Old Navy also added 45 new tall styles this week, which is the other half of why the old stock is getting cut so hard.

The activewear window is open

Old Navy tall activewear is the quietest good deal in the store right now, and every one of these has a full tall run:

Activewear promos run on a cycle and this one has been open a while. If PowerSoft or StudioSmooth leggings are on your list, buying them at a third of retail is the move.

Gap ended a promo, so check your cart

Gap is the store to watch this week for the wrong reason. Prices fell on about as many styles as they rose on, and a batch of tall styles went back to full price. If something has been sitting in your Gap cart since mid-July, it may not cost what you think it costs.

The ones that jumped hardest:

  • CloseKnit Jersey T-Shirt: $12 back to $25
  • Modern Crop Cami: $9 back to $20
  • Modern Crewneck T-Shirt: $19 back to $40
  • Supima Cotton Relaxed T-Shirt: $24 back to $50
  • High Rise UltraSoft Horseshoe Jeans: $44 back to $90
  • Mid Rise VintageSoft Terry Loose Sweatpants: $34 back to $70
  • Organic Cotton Poplin Big Shirt: $63 back to $80

Basics took the worst of it. A tall tee going from $12 to $25 overnight is the kind of thing you only notice at checkout.

Gap did cut some things, mostly transitional layers: the CashSoft Crop Cardigan fell from full price to $34 in navy and ivory beige with a full S to XXL run, and the Cotton Gauze Oversized Split-Neck Top went $47 to $29 across three colors.

Gap also dropped twelve new tall styles this week, several of them already discounted on arrival.

Gap’s standing deals are still the best jeans value

These did not move this week, which is the point. They have been this price for a while and the size runs are still complete:

Low Rise Long & Lean Jeans · $26 to $29 (was $90 to $100), about 70% off, tall waist 27 to 33 in seven washes

Low Rise Long & Lean Jeans

Seven washes, and nearly all of them have the complete 27 to 33 tall waist run in stock. Tall denim under $30 with your size actually available is the rarest combination in this whole report.

CashSoft Rib Midi Sweater Dress · $25 (was $90), 70% off, tall S to XL

Bubble Mini Dress · $25 (was $90), 70% off, tall S to XXL in black satin and sled red

Athleta is rotating, not clearing

Athleta looks flat on paper, holding at 60% on sale. Underneath, roughly as many styles went on sale as came off it, which makes this a rotation.

What just went on sale, all at 30% off:

What quietly went back to full price:

  • Salutation Stash High Rise Legging: $76 back to $109
  • Endless High Rise Barrel Pant: $83 back to $119
  • Transcend Zero Legging: $62 back to $89
  • Jetset Bomber: $118 back to $169
  • Salutation Jacket: $90 back to $129

Athleta’s six new tall styles all landed at full price during this, which is worth knowing before you pay $135 for a dress with a comparable one at 40% off two clicks away.

Athleta’s best remaining tall deals

Interval Jacket · $45 (was $135), 65% off, tall S to XL in black and bright white

Interval Jacket

The best thing left in Athleta’s tall sale, in two colors, with a full size run in both. Athleta tall outerwear at a third of retail does not sit around.

Skyline High Rise Barrel Leg Pant · $60 (was $139), 55% off, tall 0 to 16

Skyline High Rise Barrel Leg Pant

Barrel leg with the complete 0 to 16 tall run in Slate. Note that this is color-dependent, so check which colorway you have clicked before you judge the price.

Endless High Rise Pant · $45 (was $109), 60% off, tall 0 to 12 in Coastal Teal

Run Wild Vest · $50 (was $119), almost 60% off, tall S to XL in bright white and dove

J.Crew is the one going deeper

J.Crew is the only store whose tall sale share grew this week, reaching 75%, and its deepest tall cut got deeper as well. Prices fell on far more styles than they rose on.

Nearly all of it is one rack: 69 of the 108 cuts are dresses and 21 are skirts. A $248 open-back dress fell to $100 with the full tall 2 to 20 run intact, which is the single best size-availability story of the week.

We gave that one its own piece: J.Crew’s tall dress clearance.

What this means for your cart

Three things are happening at once, and they point in different directions:

Buy now at Old Navy. 486 cuts in nine days with full size runs still showing is a store clearing summer floor space ahead of fall stock. The under-$10 dresses will not last, and Old Navy does not restock clearance.

Check prices at Gap before you check out. The promo that made those basics cheap has ended. What is left worth having is the standing denim deal, which has been steady for weeks.

Wait at Athleta unless it is the Interval Jacket. The 30% rotation means whatever is full price today is likely to be discounted in a few weeks, and vice versa.

Move at J.Crew if your size is showing. That is a real clearance and it keeps cutting until the rack is empty, but the tall size runs thin out before the discount finishes.

Sale sizing is unforgiving, so check how each brand cuts before you commit: Athleta, J.Crew, Gap and Old Navy.
